One of Horizon's four core commitments is to live a life of sacrificial giving. To us, sacrificial giving includes our time, talents and financial resources. We encourage everyone who calls Horizon their home church to give a consistent percentage of their income to the Lord, specifically 10 percent as a part of a larger budget model representing the discipline of good financial stewardship.

Most importantly, we hold to the truth of 2 Corinthians 9:7: "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

Charitable Giving Account:

Many financial services providers (for example Fidelity Investments, T Rowe Price, Charles Schwab, Vanguard, etc.) allow for the creation of a charitable giving account.  This may allow you to give appreciated investments, for example stocks, in a tax-efficient manner.

Generally, these work as follows:

  1. Create a charitable giving account with your financial services provider.

  2. Gift appreciated investments into the account.

  3. Once in the account, typically these are kept in a mutual fund or other investment of your choosing.

  4. From the charitable giving account, you may then direct funds to be distributed to the charitable organization of your choice, including Horizon Church of Towson.

Typically the tax advantage of contributing in this manner may be avoidance of long-term capital gains while being able to deduct the full amount of your contribution, however, tax laws are complex and changing, so please speak with your tax advisor for more detailed advice.  If you’re interested in this process but unsure how to set this up, speak to a leader on the Horizon team and we will find you resources for assisting in this process.  Please note that maintaining a charitable giving account may have an associated annual cost (~$100-200/yr) depending on the financial services provider.

If you have any questions about giving this way, please email horizonchurchtowson@gmail.com.
